Project “water for life’ is a river restoration initiative focused on improving water quality in the Chitravathi River. The project aims to raise ample funds to repair a broken Sewage Treatment Plant, which is the primary cause of water pollution in the Chitravathi River.
The Chitravathi River is polluted by untreated sewage released from inefficient Sewage Treatment Plants in the Puttaparti region. Although the river appears clean, it contains hazardous bacteria and viruses that pose serious health risks to nearly 56,000 residents and threaten downstream water systems.
Our focus is on repairing or revitalising existing sewage treatment infrastructure. The solution would be to raise USD 50,000 to upgrade the dysfunctional Sewage Treatment Plant(hereafter STP), which is the primary cause of water pollution in the Putthaparti region. This STP upgrade will be conducted by contracted professionals such as The Deccan Environmental Consultants. Additionally, we will conduct quarterly river clean-ups aimed at removing non-biodegradable waste from the river.
The immediate beneficiaries of this project will be the residents of Puttaparthi, who will gain reliable access to a clean and safe source of water. Additionally, because the Chitravathi River flows through underground tunnels and connects to other regions of South India, surrounding rural communities will also benefit from improved water quality. Beyond this initial implementation, the project is designed as a scalable model that can be replicated in other parts of India, allowing additional communities facing water insecurity to benefit from similar solutions.
At the local level, approximately 60,000 people will receive sustainable access to clean water, strengthening public health and restoring access to a resource fundamental to the constitutional right to life. At the national level, nearly 40% of India’s population lacks reliable access to clean water, according to the World Economic Forum. This initiative represents an important first step in addressing that gap and advancing long-term water security. At the global level, the project directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), contributing to international efforts to ensure safe and affordable drinking water for all.
“availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
The long-term vision of Project water for life is to create a replicable, open-source river-cleaning model that can be adopted across India. Beyond river restoration, the project advocates for clean water as a basic human right and supports sustainable development aligned with global water and sanitation goals.
